چکیده

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a popular approach for considering the broader impacts of industrial products and processes. LCA relies on information about emissions throughout the life cycle and their impacts. For emerging technologies or at early stages of engineering design, such detailed information about emissions and their impact is usually not available. However, data about inputs to various industrial processes are much more readily available. This paper discusses a unique role that emergy analysis may be able to play in evaluating emerging technologies such as nanotechnology and green chemistry, with only input-side information. The second law implies that, among different technologies for achieving the same objective, the one with a higher transformity (lower life cycle thermodynamic efficiency) should have a larger environmental impact. However, the life cycle must be broad enough to account for all the thermodynamic processes, including those occurring in ecological systems. Emergy analysis is unique in its ability to meet this requirement. Furthermore, it seems that products with a higher transformity rely more on ecosystem goods and services, and are likely to play a greater role in ecosystem dynamics. These hypotheses, if true would place emergy analysis in a unique position for LCA of emerging technologies and at early stages of decision making. However, these hypotheses need to be statistically validated. This paper presents results for different ways of making electricity which show that if the contribution of ecosystem goods and services is ignored, as in Cumulative Exergy Consumption, the results violate the hypothesis. This indicates the potential unique ability of emergy analysis for evaluating the life cycle environmental aspects of emerging technologies, which we hope will encourage further research in this direction.

The Added Value of Integrating Emergy into LCA

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become a standard procedure to investigate the environmental performance of human-dominated products and processes. It is meant to capture the overall impact of a product or service along its lifetime and supply chain, and it is structured in four steps: goal definition and scoping, inventory, impact assessment, and interpretation. Impact assessment is carried ou...

Thermodynamic Assessment and Optimization of Performance of Irreversible Atkinson Cycle

Although various investigations of Atkinson cycle have been carried out, distinct output power and thermal efficiencies of the engine have been achieved. In this regard, thermal efficiency, Ecological Coefficient of Performance (ECOP), and Ecological function (ECF) are optimized with the help of NSGA-II method and thermodynamic study.  The Pareto optimal frontier ...

A thermodynamic framework for ecologically conscious process systems engineering

Making process systems engineering decisions that are ecologically conscious requires analysis of both industrial and ecological processes. Traditional methods in process engineering usually fall short of meeting this requirement due to considering the environment as secondary to economic objectives. Life cycle assessment and design methods have broadened the scope of traditional methods by con...

Emergy of Gold Mined at Yanacocha Based on an LCA Model

A Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) was assembled for gold production extending from the formation of gold-ore deposits through the production of semi-refined gold-silver bullion. Inputs traditionally considered in life cycle assessment (LCA) such as energy, materials, and capital were counted along with geologic inputs and labor. Emergy, rather than traditional LCA methods, was used to make inventory...

Emergy analysis of greenhouse cucumber production in Sistan region

In the current century, agriculture sustainability and the reduction of environmental pressure are two main objectives of the management of agro-ecosystems that is challenged by energy inefficiency. In this respect, the present study assessed one of the most important planting systems in Sistan region by emergy analysis approach. It analyzed all inputs of greenhouse cucumber production system i...
